New Street Art Designs Using Common Items

Original design an old Detroit apt of mine

This summer I’ve been working on a project that originally stemmed from an art work I did in Detroit. I had the idea to make a sort of triangular, corner shaped sculpture on a wall, made entirely out of post-it notes. I put it up next to the closet in my bedroom and it worked really well. You can see a pic of it below from Instagram a few years ago. I also actually eventually did something similar in the ArtHouse 43 Hallway Gallery just outside my Midtown apartment. That pic is below, as well. This one was a different design with more color variety, but it was still the same materials, still a similar idea.

Cut to earlier this summer and somehow, I’m not sure where ideas come from of course, but somehow I had the idea to start putting them up in public, keeping the same shape, for the most part, of that original design next to my closet in my Detroit apartment. So that’s what I did. I’ve been putting them up in public places In several different cities in Michigan, including Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Battle Creek. It’ll spread even further, of course, Lansing, Detroit and Chicago, etc. But it’s been really encouraging to see all the good feedback I’ve got from it. It seems to be viewed pretty favorably so far.

Some of them have been destroyed by natural elements but most of them are still standing. In terms of the longevity, that’s the nature of street art, I suppose. These are temporary fixtures, of course, and no damage will come to anywhere I’ve been putting them up. I’ve taken great care to make sure of that and have been using an adhesive that is non-permanent and is recommended for temporary things. But most of them seem to be holding pretty well. Some of them have been up for weeks. I try to protect them by putting them in places with some sort of shelter from rain but are still easily visible. Some of them are just highly visible spots with no protection so I choose to put them up anyway. In any case, the project has been going great so far and I can’t wait to keep doing more. In fact, I think I will probably get bigger and I will try to be more bold and catch people’s attention on a larger scale.

Some of them I have signed on site and some of them not. It doesn’t really matter to me. I think the idea is that I like to put things out in the world and see who notices them. I’ve seen a few discussions on social media about them in different cities and I always get a kick out of that. I love it when people notice something that wasn’t there or that creates interest to them and their friends. I think that’s what art is all about. Catching your attention, hopefully affecting you in someway and challenging How you think of the world and what your expectations are. I love these things I think they’re beautiful. It’s a very simple, mono chromatic design but I think it’s very eye-catching and I hope that more people start to notice them and have an interaction with them because, in some weird way, it’s like I’m connecting with strangers through this project.

You can see most of the pictures I’ve taken below, of the ones I’ve done so far. More to come! And a project title to come, too ;)
