Pushing Your Lifeboat Over the Mountain #199
In Werner Herzog’s cinematic masterpiece “Fitzcarraldo”, Klaus Kinski plays a (mad)man who dreams of building an opera house in a South American village. In order to earn the riches needed for his dream, he decides to get rich dealing in the rubber business and must push a large riverboat uphill and into the Amazon river basin in order to get access to resources. It’s a monumental undertaking which is rich in metaphor and runs deep in existential questions.
Driving out west to undertake my own project, the Roadkill Project, I’m reminded of the story of Fitzcarraldo and the challenges, purpose and elements contained within the story of this film. The Roadkill Project is a project where I temporarily leave my quarantine state on a quest for creative inspiration traveling first to the beautiful Pacific Northwest and then back through the great southwest of America. Artworks, soundworks and episodes for this ArtHouse Radio podcast are the focus, hopefully illuminating something important about myself, the work and the journey itself.
