Sound and Light Installation SOUND SPACE Gets Second Exhibition
The award-winning sound and light art installation called Sound Space is starting to grab the attention of a growing number of curators. This unique artwork just finished its second exhibition after its premiere at the high-profile the new during ArtPrize 10 in Grand Rapids last fall. This exhibit was at the Art Center of Battle Creek where it was featured for over a month and received fantastic support and sponsorship from big names.
The turnout for this artwork continues to grow as it is slowly becoming one of the more recognized multi-media works across Michigan. So far, this work has been financially sponsored by big-name players in the state, including ArtPrize, The WK Kellogg Foundation, the Battle Creek Community Foundation and BC Vision.
“I think one of the interesting qualities of this work is that it becomes a different work every time I set it up,” says the artist Troy Ramos. “The sounds I created are the same, but the visual set up and the way the lights interact with each new space have to emanate from the space itself. You have to work with the space. So that guarantees that each exhibition of Sound Space will be uniquely different.“
Sound Space is a sound and light art installation which takes over the space it occupies, creating a calming, reflective environment where Ramos curates a light display of neon-esque lights in a darkened space. These visual aspects are then put together with the original sound art work he created which plays on speakers on a loop throughout the gallery.
“This work is becoming even more abstract. Compared to its premiere exhibition, the lights have evolved into a kind of seemingly improvised collection of light shapes that change as you move through the exhibit,“ Ramos said. “This is very different than the kind of more direct, big space approach people saw at ArtPrize.“
This artwork got it start in May 2018 when Ramos won over the ArtPrize panel of judges at the Detroit Pitch Night awards in Hamtramck. ArtPrize travels to five cities across the country searching for the best artworks it can feature at its massive, every-other-year arts festival, which is also backed up by a $5000 award to each city’s winner. “Winning the Detroit Pitch Night award from ArtPrize was huge for me. It was such an honor and a great opportunity that has led to so many more of their opportunities, as well.“
Ramos says this work is headed to other cities both in Michigan and across the country. “I have many other projects that are happening constantly, but I want to continue to bring Sound Space to as many places as I can. Right now I’m in the planning stages of bringing it to Detroit and Los Angeles. The biggest obstacle to overcome at this point, for any of my works actually, is funding and the resources to transport it.”
This second exhibition of Sound Space was financially sponsored by the WK Kellogg Foundation, the Battle Creek Community Foundation, FireKeepers Casino and BC Vision. “I cannot thank these sponsors enough. They are true patrons of the arts and their continued support of artists and of my works are generous investments towards the cultural vibrancy of the Art Center, Battle Creek and the state of Michigan.“
